Aditi Is A 'School Girl', Sanjeeda An 'Outsider': Sharmin Segal's Comments On Heeramandi Co-Stars Sparks Heavy Backlash

Sanjay Leela Bhansali 's niece Sharmin Segal , who essayed Alamzeb in the ace director's debut series Heeramandi , has become the centre of attention, but not exactly for the reasons she'd hoped for. While critics and fans have labelled her acting as 'expressionless', it’s her off-screen behaviour towards her seniors and co-stars, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sanjeeda Sheikh , that’s truly raising eyebrows.

Take, for instance, Sharmin’s recent comment about Aditi. While it might seem like a backhanded compliment on the surface, Sharmin’s words carry a subtle sting. “Aditi is like the model student. She adheres strictly to deadlines, just like a teacher’s pet. If the teacher says homework is due at a certain time, Aditi will ensure it’s submitted on the dot, not a word over the limit. That’s just who Aditi is. So, while everyone else might be running late, she’s always on time.” Such remarks can easily be perceived as condescending, especially when directed towards a well-established actress.

In another instance, Sharmin’s interaction with Aditi on the nature of actors highlighted her dismissive attitude. Sharmin stated, “Actors are inherently insecure,” to which Aditi countered, “No, but actors are human beings.” Sharmin persisted, “If you’re not insecure - let’s leave Sona (Sonakshi Sinha) out of this because she is the most secure person I know. But honestly, there is a certain magic in insecurity as well. If you are not insecure, then you’re not pushing yourself to a certain limit. There’s a thrill in insecurity.” Many felt that this was an unnecessary argument that exposed a lack of respect for differing opinions.

Sanjeeda, another senior actress in Heeramandi, also faced Sharmin’s sharp tongue. In an interview, after Sanjeeda called SLB a 'perfectionist', Sharmin responded, “I think 'perfectionist' is a very basic word to describe Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It’s the kind of word that an outsider who has never worked with him, been on his set and seen the kind of director that he is will use. He is much more than that. He adapts to change very well. He keeps challenging through different things. It is not about being perfect. He looks for rawness, magic, and spontaneity. If he was only a perfectionist he would not treat spontaneity the way he does.” While Sharmin might have intended to praise Bhansali, her choice of words belittles Sanjeeda and her work experience thus far.

It’s one thing to have strong opinions, but another to express them in a way that diminishes the contributions and perspectives of others, particularly those with more experience. Let's hope Sharmin can turn things around. After all, the real magic of acting isn't insecurity, it's the ability to connect with the audience and bring characters to life. Perhaps with a little less shade and a little more focus on her craft, Sharmin can shine in her future projects.
