High cholesterol in women in their 50s may quietly accumulate in the arteries over time, forming plaque and gradually narrowing the blood vessels. This process, known as atherosclerosis, can progress unnoticed for years. Despite the absence of obvious symptoms, the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular issues steadily increases. Therefore, regular health screenings to monitor cholesterol levels are crucial, especially as women age.

Angina or chest pain: High cholesterol can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart and causing chest pain or discomfort, known as angina.

Shortness of breath: Reduced blood flow to the heart due to narrowed arteries can result in shortness of breath, especially during physical exertion, says Banerjee.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) symptoms: High cholesterol can affect arteries in other parts of the body, such as the legs, leading to symptoms like leg pain or cramping during physical activity.

Stroke symptoms: If cholesterol plaques rupture and cause a blood clot to form, it can block blood flow to the brain, leading to stroke symptoms such as sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Yellowish deposits around the eyes: High levels of cholesterol can sometimes manifest as yellowish deposits around the eyes called xanthelasma.

Fatigue: Reduced blood flow due to narrowed arteries can lead to fatigue or weakness, as the body may not be receiving enough oxygen rich blood.
