Cole Palmer has backed Mauricio Pochettino to stay as Chelsea manager next season.

Palmer has been a revelation for the Blues since arriving from Manchester City last summer, scoring 25 goals and notching 14 assists in all competitions. He has carved out a role as Chelsea's most important player, earning a spot in the England senior team along the way.

Like Palmer, this is also Pochettino's first season at Stamford Bridge, though it has been plagued by speculation around his future. The Blues have endured a mostly mixed campaign, but they now sit sixth in the top flight after beating Brighton 2-1 on Wednesday.

Palmer opened the scoring against the Seagulls, with Christopher Nkunku scoring their second. As his side celebrated, Palmer gave Pochettino his full support and revealed his desire to see the Argentine remain in charge.

"We needed the three points. It was hard towards the end and throughout the match, but to get the three points and for it to be in our hands to get sixth place is big for us. Hopefully we can do it," he said.

" Chelsea is a big club, everyone wants to finish higher than sixth, but we have to look at where we’ve been at the start of the season, throughout the season. We’ve been 13th and 12th this season.

"Last season was the same, so to get back into Europe is a step in the right direction. Big credit to the manager because all the players love him, we’ve got to fight for him. It’s been a good season and hopefully we can get European football at the end of it.

"The header was all right! Marc knows where I’m going to be and he had a look up before he crossed it. Thankfully I lifted it over the goalkeeper and it went in. Getting 22 goals in the Premier League is a big achievement.

"Obviously Lampard is one of the best Chelsea players in history, but hopefully I can keep going. It’s my first season but I’ve got to keep pushing on. It might be tough to get more next season, but I will give it a go!"

Pochettino sparked fresh doubt over his future last week by admitting he could consider departing this summer. But ahead of Wednesday's win, the Chelsea boss rowed back on those claims, instead insisting he is focusing on planning for pre-season.

"We are planning," he said. "We are working. I think we cannot take some comment from my side to put in a negative way because I always try to be positive to try and translate my feelings to you and the people.

"But I never say that we were not thinking in the future. We are thinking in the future. The plan is there to start the pre-season, the data and everything, how we are going to start and then it is not in my hands to be here or not to be here."
