As temperatures soar during heatwaves, many individuals experience an unexpected aggravation of arthritis and joint pain . While it is widely believed that cold weather conditions can aggravate arthritis symptoms, the impact of high temperatures is less commonly known, but equally significant. We got in touch with a health expert, who explains how heatwave can increase arthritis and joint pain.

Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director - Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali shares that high temperatures can lead to dehydration . Joints require adequate hydration to maintain lubrication and function smoothly. Dehydration can result in a decrease in synovial fluid, the natural lubricant in our joints, leading to increased friction, stiffness, and pain.

“Heatwaves often lead to increased physical activity as people engage in outdoor activities. While exercise is beneficial for joint health, excessive activity or exercising in high temperatures without proper hydration can lead to overuse injuries and exacerbate existing conditions like arthritis,” he said.

Excessive Heat Leads To Inflammation

Dr Akhilesh Yadav explains inflammation is a key component of arthritis, and high temperatures can influence inflammatory responses in the body. Heat can increase the circulation to the skin, potentially diverting blood flow from the muscles and joints, thus exacerbating inflammation and pain. For individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune condition, heat stress can trigger flare-ups due to the body’s heightened inflammatory response.

Managing Arthritis During Heatwaves

Dr Akhilesh shares some strategies to manage arthritis and joint pain during heatwaves:

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to ensure your joints remain well-lubricated. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Avoid Peak Heat Hours: Plan activities for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Avoiding direct sunlight can help minimize heat exposure.

3. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Light, breathable clothing can help keep your body temperature down. Consider wearing a hat and using an umbrella to provide shade when outdoors.

4. Take Cool Baths or Showers: These can help reduce body temperature and soothe aching joints.

5. Maintain a Healthy Diet: A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help manage inflammation. Avoid processed foods and sugars that can contribute to inflammation.

6. Exercise Wisely: Low-impact exercises, such as swimming or cycling in a controlled environment, can be beneficial. Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat.

Seeking Medical Advice

“For those with severe arthritis or persistent joint pain, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. Personalized advice and treatment plans can make a significant difference. Medications, physical therapy, and other interventions may be necessary to manage symptoms effectively during extreme weather conditions,” he said.
