Assam's Hailakandi district reported the death of a 15-mont-old infant whose relatives refused treatment at the hospital despite doctor's suggestions. Why is it important to get thorough swine flu treatment?

Guwahati: A 15-month-old infant in Assam identified as Farhana Khanam, died after suffering from swine flu. Reports say that the relatives refused to treat the patient at a hospital. When the infant was bought o the hospital, she was already in a very critical condition. According to IANS report, the doctors had advised to immediately put her on ventilator support. However, the relatives did not agree to the advice and took her away. The infant died later when she was bought back front he hospital without the complete treatment. Experts from the Hailakandi district of Assam reported that, SMCH has recorded about 5 cases swine flu so far with one recovery. Patients with comorbidities are warned by doctors to take precautions.

What Is Swine Flu?

Swine flu or the H1N1 virus is a type of viral infection which spreads to humans from animals, particularly from pigs. Swine flue infection is not always fatal but it can be especially for infants and people with comorbidities and for people who do not get timely treatment. In the year 2009, the world had undergone a pandemic with a massive spread in H1N1 virus. Millions of people were infected. Nowadays, it has become easier to treat and prevent swine flu. You can either take an H1N1 annual flu shot or take treatment in the hospital and take antiviral medications.

Why Is Immediate Treatment Necessary For Swine Flu?

As mentioned earlier, swine flu is not a one hundred percent fatal disease. Because of medial advancements, it is preventable as well as treatable. However, experts from Hailakandi hospital told IANS that some people may be more susceptible to swine flu for instance, people with comorbidities. Comorbidities include people who suffer from underlying diseases like, diabetes, respiratory distress and immunosuppressant patients. Babies and new borns' are also very vulnerable because their immunity has not developed yet. If swine flu goes untreated for these groups of vulnerable people, fatalities may also be possible. This is particularly why it is extremely essential for everyone to consult a doctor if they get infected with swine flu.

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to that of normal flu but there may be complications for some patients:
