Kanpur minor detained in hit-and-run case, was out on bail in similar incident

A 15-year-old boy, son of a renowned doctor in Kanpur, was detained by police on Wednesday in a hit-and-run case from October last year. The police admitted that there were lapses in the case as the boy was involved in a similar incident in March this year. On March 31, the boy was again involved in a similar incident where he injured four people with his car. The police registered a case under IPC Sections 279 and 338 (reckless driving) after the incident, but he was let go. We have detained him in the first case and invoked Section 304 of the IPC.

The Kanpur teen's detention comes amid an outcry over the Pune crash case, where another minor is accused of ramming his speeding Porsche into a two-wheeler and killing two people.

According to the police, the said incident took place in October 2023, when the teen fatally knocked down two children with his speeding car in the city's Barra area.

A case was registered against him under Section 304 of the IPC (pertaining to causing death by negligence, not amounting to culpable homicide). However, he was released on bail soon after the incident.

On March 31, the boy was again involved in a similar incident where he injured four people with his car. The police registered a case under IPC Sections 279 and 338 (reckless driving) after the incident, but he was let go.

However, the police detained the boy on Wednesday and sent him to a juvenile facility.

Speaking to India Today TV, Kanpur's Commissioner of Police Akhil Kumar said, "... The case came to our notice recently. We have instructed the officials to act swiftly and quickly in the matter. It is a matter of concern that a child, who should have faced action earlier, is driving again. His parents are letting him behind the wheel again despite being involved in a fatal accident last year."

"The recent accident in Pune also gives context to this case... We deeply reviewed the case once it came into our cognisance and found that he was at fault in both cases. We have detained him in the first case and invoked Section 304 of the IPC. We are further investigating the case," he said.

On being asked whether lapses on the part of the police led to the accused coming out of custody, the Commissioner said, "Somewhere a few people are responsible for the lapses in the case. The ACP who is investigating the case has been tasked to look into this as well. The DCP has also been asked to monitor the entire process. Whoever is responsible, whether a cop or any other official who tried to manage the case, will face action."
