Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has shot down reports that it was preparing to launch a Google Search alternative in the coming days. OpenAI does have an event scheduled for May 13, barely a few hours before Google’s I/O 2024 developer conference kicks off, but it won’t be to launch a next-generation GPT-5. Instead, OpenAI will announce new “ChatGPT and GPT-4” updates at its May 13 event.

Altman has gone so far as to call the new updates magical in a post published on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. Speculation was rife that OpenAI was secretly building a Google Search engine alternative, and going by how it has been able to give Google a run for money on generative AI, it was expected that the OpenAI search engine could be at least competitive. “We’ll be streaming live on http://openai.com at 10AM PT Monday, May 13 to demo some ChatGPT and GPT-4 updates,” OpenAI said.

The aim of introducing new functions is to more successfully compete with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Perplexity as reported by a Bloomberg report earlier this week.

With the help of some new features, users can ask questions from ChatGPT and receive replies that draw information from the internet and provide citations. Experts suggest that the new updates can also provide you with written answers along with visuals where they are needed. More details are awaited.
