‘Salman Khan didn’t replace me in Maine Pyar Kiya’, says Piyush Mishra; thanks his stars he didn’t get the role: ‘Wouldn’t have handled the stardom well’

Actor-writer Piyush Mishra said that he was never locked as the leading star of filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya’s romantic drama Maine Pyar Kiya, which launched Salman Khan into stardom. Piyush Mishra said he was “considered” for the part, but at a very early stage of discussion when nothing was finalised. Looking back at his revelations, Piyush Mishra said in a new interview that his probable casting wasn’t “that big a deal” as nothing was locked with regards to him signing Maine Pyar Kiya. Piyush Mishra said a lot of people tried “provoking” him to take mileage out of this situation and claim that Salman Khan replaced him in the film, which he said was simply untrue. Featuring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, Maine Pyar Kiya was a blockbuster upon its release and is considered one of the most memorable romantic films in Bollywood history.

Last year, while talking to The Lallantop, Mishra had revealed he was in talks for the film but things didn’t materialise and eventually Salman came on board for the 1989 musical romance drama.

Looking back at his revelations, Piyush Mishra said in a new interview that his probable casting wasn’t “that big a deal” as nothing was locked with regards to him signing Maine Pyar Kiya. In an interview with Zoom, Mishra said there was a time when he was “considered” for the film, when he was a student at National School of Drama.

“But it wasn’t that I had become a star or I had landed that part. It was an early discussion, and I was majorly considered by Sooraj Barjatya’s father. He had come to meet me; he didn’t cast me as such. I was in third year when this had happened. It wasn’t that big a deal at all, I don’t know why it was blown out of proportion, that I was just on the brink of becoming a star but then couldn’t. Arey baba nahi yaar.

“A lot of things would have happened, I would’ve had to come to Mumbai, give an audition and then would’ve been offered the role. Even then, I am certain a lot of other people would have also been in contention for the part,” he said.

Piyush Mishra said a lot of people tried “provoking” him to take mileage out of this situation and claim that Salman Khan replaced him in the film, which he said was simply untrue. The writer-actor-director added that in the hindsight, he feels happy he couldn’t land the opportunity as he wouldn’t have been able to handle the stardom.

“They wanted me to claim the role was taken away from me. But that isn’t true. I went on to work a lot after that. If by chance I had landed the opportunity, I would have bagged that big a chance prematurely, at an age when I was perhaps not ready mentally, physically or emotionally. I was a 26-year-old boy then, I could not have handled the success. Mera dimaag ud jaata. I would not have been to handle that kind of stardom, and I accept it. I was not ready for it, so it is good this didn’t happen with me,” he added.

Featuring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, Maine Pyar Kiya was a blockbuster upon its release and is considered one of the most memorable romantic films in Bollywood history. Sooraj Barjatya teamed up with Khan for memorable hits like Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hum Saath-Saath Hain and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
