Two Asteroids, Including 336-Foot, Racing Towards Earth This Month; Check Size, Speed, Distance, More

However, the threat is not over yet as NASA has reported that two space rocks are still left to pass the Earth this month closely. NASA’s JPL data shows that this asteroid will pass by Earth at a distance of 3.28 million miles. It is important to keep an eye on these asteroids because these space rocks do hit our home planet. Most small asteroids burn up in the atmosphere before reaching Earth. To track these asteroids, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) monitors potentially dangerous asteroids using data from observatories like Pan-STARRS, the Catalina Sky Survey, and NASA's NEOWISE mission.

Two asteroids are closing towards Earth this month at alarming speeds.

Earth has escaped the terror of a giant 510-foot asteroid today . However, the threat is not over yet as NASA has reported that two space rocks are still left to pass the Earth this month closely. On 30th May, there is a 117-foot-wide giant asteroid which will make its closest approach towards our home planet. NASA has dubbed this space rock as 2024 JA3, which is moving at 30555 KMPH.

However, the worrisome asteroid is the 2008 XH which will make its closest approach towards Earth on May 31st. NASA has confirmed it is approximately 336-foot (102.42 metres) in size. Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. They can contain elements or dust from other planets and float in space for years. If a large asteroid heads towards Earth, it can be dangerous. NASA has issued an alert for an asteroid travelling at a fast speed of 52,900 kilometres per hour (14.71 kmps).

The concern is that will it impact our Earth in any way. NASA’s JPL data shows that this asteroid will pass by Earth at a distance of 3.28 million miles. While this is relatively close in space terms, NASA has confirmed it is not a potentially hazardous asteroid. Such asteroids are defined as being over 150 meters in diameter and coming within 4.6 million miles of Earth. The asteroid 2008 XH does not meet these criteria, so it is not considered a threat.

It is important to keep an eye on these asteroids because these space rocks do hit our home planet. Most small asteroids burn up in the atmosphere before reaching Earth. However, an asteroid the size of a large skyscraper could destroy an entire city and cause many deaths. A similar event, the Chicxulub impact, caused massive devastation and led to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species.

To track these asteroids, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) monitors potentially dangerous asteroids using data from observatories like Pan-STARRS, the Catalina Sky Survey, and NASA's NEOWISE mission. The upcoming NEO Surveyor and radar projects like JPL's Goldstone Solar System Radar also play key roles in this effort.
