In November 2022, WhatsApp had introduced a new feature called communities that allowed users to unite people of several groups under a common umbrella. Announcing the feature in a blog post, the company had said that "communities like neighbourhoods, parents at a school, and workplaces can now connect multiple groups together under one umbrella to organise group conversations on WhatsApp." Today, the feature comes in handy for WhatsApp users across the globe. And now, as per recent reports, WhatsApp is planning to further enhance the feature.

A report in WA Beta Info says that users will soon be able to transfer ownership of their communities. In other words, WhatsApp users will be able to change admins of communities in a future update. As per the report, in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.11.18, a new feature is being tested that will allow community admins to transfer ownership to another member. This feature, spotted in the beta update available on the Google Play Store, aims to simplify the process of handing over administrative responsibilities within WhatsApp communities.

According to screenshots shared by beta testers, the feature is designed to ensure a smooth transition of ownership. When an admin chooses to transfer ownership, they relinquish their primary administrative privileges, such as the ability to disable the entire community. However, they retain their status as a community admin unless demoted or removed by the new owner or other admins.

The introduction of this feature is expected to enhance user experience by facilitating seamless leadership transitions. It will be particularly beneficial in cases where admins need to step back due to personal reasons or changing priorities while still wanting to remain involved in supporting the community.

As the feature is currently in the testing phase, more details are likely to emerge as WhatsApp refines and prepares it for a broader rollout in future updates.

This isn't the only feature that WhatsApp has been working on. An earlier report by WA Beta Info said that WhatsApp is ready to give users more control over who can view their Status Updates. A screenshot shared by the publication showed that beta testers could access a new audience selector when sharing images and videos through status updates. This feature prompts users to review their audience before posting, ensuring their content reaches the intended recipients.

Before sharing images and videos via status updates, users will have the option to change their audience by selecting their favourite contacts. This enhancement gives users greater control over their sharing experience, allowing them to tailor who can view their updates.
