Former BCCI chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil has urged the BCCI to step up and fund the treatment of Anshuman Gaekwad as the latter continues to fight blood cancer in London.
Writing in his column for Mid-Day , Patil wrote that while his ex-teammate Gaekwad has received financial support from the cricket board, he would be requiring more assistance in this regard.
Patil revealed that he and former player Dilip Vengsarkar also had a conversation with BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar after seeing Gaekwad in the hospital. According to the ex-cricketer, Shelar instantly agreed to look into the situation as well as to the fund requests of other former Indian players.
Anshuman Gaekwad played 40 Test matches for Team India between December 1974 and December 1984. His defensive mindset against fast bowlers defied West Indies’ raging bowling attack for much of his career, and he was fittingly nicknamed ‘The Wall’ for his approach.
Gaekwad also coached the Indian cricket team on two separate terms, during which the ‘Men in Blue’ reached the finals of the 2000 Champions Trophy. Moreover, under his tenure, all-time great Sachin Tendulkar also flourished in international cricket.
