The life of the late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila has once again come into spotlight following the release of Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix film. He and his second wife, singer Amarjot, were shot dead in Mehsampur, Punjab, where they were supposed to perform. Even 36 years after his tragic demise, his personal life remains a subject of interest. In an interview, Jaswant Kaur, elder sister of Amarjot, revealed that Chamkila had kept his first marriage hidden from Amarjot’s family.

“There were no plans of Amarjot’s marriage. Chamkila didn’t tell us that he is already married. He told us that he was unmarried. My father had two conditions – that the boy should be singer and unmarried. They finally tied the knot. After the birth of Amarjot and Chamkila’s son, we got to know about his first marriage,” she told BBC Hindi.

She continued, “It has been 36 years but we still haven’t gotten any justice, no file was opened. We demand that the perpetrators be arrested and punished. We have lost our family members so they should be punished.”

Meanwhile, Chamkila’s first wife, Gurmail Kaur, spoke out about his tragic death in a recent interview. “We didn’t have phones back then. I heard about it through the news and word of mouth. My parents first sent a person to confirm the news. When that man returned and confirmed the news, then we went to see them,” Gurmail said in an interview with Love Punjab.

She also shared that the last time she met him was just a day or two before he was shot dead. She added that Amarjot was with him. “We met him a day before his death. At the time, it was raining a lot,” she recalled.

“Amarjot and I were in the kitchen and we watched him get drenched in the rain. I felt his face was different, I thought it had turned black. I looked at his face in different intervals and his face continued to look black,” she said in Punjabi. “When I saw his mortal remains, it was the same black face that I was seeing the last time I saw him,” she added.
