Actor Anil Kapoor looked back on when he was just a regular guy, trying to woo the girl of his dreams, but without the money to take her out.
He said that during this time, when he wouldn’t even have enough money to pay for dates, his wife Sunita would quickly pay the bills without making him feel awkward about it.
Anil Kapoor married Sunita in 1984; they’ve been together for 50 years, he said at an event in Mumbai for a detergent brand, eliciting applause from the crowd.
He recalled, “In my life, when I first met Sunita, 50 years ago… When I met her, obviously I was not doing very well financially.
Automatically, she knows that of course I don’t have the money to pay the bill.

He recalled, “In my life, when I first met Sunita, 50 years ago… When I met her, obviously I was not doing very well financially. She would take care of a lot of things, and that’s how we shared the load. She stepped forward to share the load where money was concerned. It’s not only about doing household jobs. There were times when I couldn’t afford certain things, but I didn’t have to tell her. She would automatically… travelling, going out for meals, sometimes we’d go to a normal restaurant, sometimes we’d go to a slightly better restaurant when we were dating each other. Automatically, she knows that of course I don’t have the money to pay the bill. So, she quickly slips some money out of her bag, and before I can come to know, she’s already paid the bill.”

When you share the load without making it obvious, and without making the other person feel about it, that’s wonderful.” Celebrating their anniversary some years ago, Anil Kapoor narrated stories about their courtship to Humans of Bombay. He said, “She was from a liberal family–a banker’s daughter with a modelling career. I was bekaar! She didn’t care who I was or what my profession is, none of it mattered. I lived in Chembur and she lived on Nepean Sea road. It took me an hour to reach by bus. She would start screaming, ‘No come fast by cab.’ And I’d say, ‘Arrey I don’t have money’, then she’d say, ‘Just come na’, and pay for my cab. We dated for 10 years–we travelled and grew together.”
