Apple is set to introduce a new artificial intelligence system called " Apple Intelligence " at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, commencing on June 10. This innovative system will be available on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, providing new AI features across Apple’s platforms and apps. According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple Intelligence will also offer access to a new ChatGPT-like chatbot powered by OpenAI.

New AI Features

Unlike other tech companies focusing on flashy AI features like image or video generation, Apple is taking a more practical approach. The new system will enhance apps with AI-powered summarisations, reply suggestions, and an upgraded Siri. This AI overhaul for Siri aims to give it better control over apps and broader user appeal.

How It Works

Apple Intelligence will use both Apple’s technology and tools from OpenAI to power its features. The system will employ an algorithm to decide whether tasks can be processed on the device or if they need to be sent to a cloud server. This hybrid approach aims to balance efficiency and security. Apple plans to use its own M2 chips in data centers with a Secure Enclave to ensure that data processed remotely remains as secure as if it were processed on the device itself.

Privacy and Security

Privacy has always been a key concern for Apple, and Apple Intelligence is no exception. To address potential security issues, Apple will not create user profiles based on data and will generate reports to show that user information isn’t being sold or read. This approach contrasts with Microsoft’s recent Copilot Plus PCs, which faced significant criticism for security vulnerabilities.

Device Compatibility

For users to access Apple Intelligence, specific hardware requirements will need to be met. iPad or Mac users will need devices with an M1 chip or later. For mobile devices, the requirements might be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro or the upcoming iPhone 16 models expected to launch this September.

Opt-In Feature

Importantly, Apple will not force users to adopt the new AI features. Instead, these capabilities will be opt-in, giving users the choice to enable them.

As Apple continues to innovate, the introduction of Apple Intelligence marks a significant step in making AI more integrated and useful in everyday tasks while maintaining a strong focus on privacy and security.
