Having seen Liverpool lose to Crystal Palace earlier in the day, the Gunners began the game like a team determined to take advantage. Gabriel Jesus hit the side netting before Bukayo Saka hit the post as Arsenal dominated the early stages and should have been in front.
Villa though continued to carry a threat and were unlucky not to take the lead themselves when Ollie Watkins' shot bounced back off the inside of the post and out. Arsenal continued to dominate and could have taken the lead into half-time when Leandro Trossard missed from close range.
They were made to regret those missed chances as they produced an appalling second half display. Youri Tielemans gave the hosts a warning with a shot off both the post and bar, before Leon Bailey capitalised on defensive uncertainty to put the visitors 1-0 up.
