There has been a massive surge in the number of dengue cases in the country. For those who don't know, Dengue is a mosquito-borne illness that is usually seen in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Mild dengue might cause high fever and flu-like symptoms. However, severe form of dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, can lead to serious bleeding and a sudden drop in blood pressure. Therefore, it is important that you take all the required precautions to keep yourself protected.

This mosquito-borne viral infection, is transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water. The spike in cases has been attributed to several factors, including climate change, rapid urbanization, and inadequate mosquito control measures. The rainy season, which creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, has exacerbated the situation.

Currently, there is no widely available vaccine for dengue in the country, making prevention and control efforts heavily reliant on public health measures like mosquito control, awareness campaigns, and early diagnosis and treatment.

"A vaccine would significantly reduce the disease burden," says Dr L Sudarshan Reddy, Sr Consultant Physician. He further added that a vaccine can prevent the severe complications associated with dengue, such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome .

"With the increasing frequency and severity of outbreaks, increased focus should be that we expedite the development and deployment of a safe and effective vaccine. The rising dengue cases and fatalities underscore the need for robust public health infrastructure and comprehensive disease management strategies. While efforts to control mosquito populations and educate the public are ongoing, the development of a dengue vaccine could be a of great value in reducing the incidence and impact of this debilitating disease in Indi," he added.

Here is a look at some tips to protect yourself from dengue:

Use Mosquito Repellent

Apply insect repellent on your child’s exposed skin and clothes. Choose products that have DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil. These repellents help to effectively keep away mosquitoes.

Wear Protective Clothing

Dress your children in long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes, especially during peak mosquito activity times (early morning and late afternoon). Also, light-coloured clothes should be preferable as it is less attractive to mosquitoes.

Use Mosquito Nets

Make sure that your children sleep under mosquito nets, especially in areas where dengue is prevalent. These nets act as a physical barrier during nighttime or napping hours.
