According to the World Health Organization, direct usage of tobacco claims a staggering 8 million lives every year. Consuming tobacco can be harmful on a lot of levels. And as dangerous as it is, it has recently been discovered that a person who had been smoking for decades developed a bizarre condition, as a part of which, curly black hair started growing at the back of his throat, inside his mouth.

According to a report in the American Journal of Case Reports, a 52-year-old Australian man developed this rare condition possibly due to smoking. The doctors suggest that heavy usage of tobacco can be the cause of this condition. He smoked heavily for 30 years, the report claimed.

He first resorted to medical attention at the age of 35 when he experienced symptoms of respiratory distress attacks. He also experienced chronic coughing, snoring, and much more. He coughed out a hair of 5cm.

Initially, the doctors removed the hair and gave him a course of medicines. This is because the hair had bacterial growth. The procedure, however, had to be repeated annually and provided only temporary relief as the regrowth could not be stopped.

It all started when a patient had a surgery at age 10 after a near-drowning incident. As a part of the surgery, an air tube was placed in his trachea to help oxygen reach his lungs. Skin and cartilage graft was used from his ear for the reconstruction of the tracheal defect. This is how the endotracheal hair growth occurred.

The issue, however, was resolved when the patient quit smoking and the doctors performed an endoscopic argon plasma coagulation. After a year, only two hair were seen growing and the process was repeated following which no hair growth has been observed.

According to the American Lung Association, cigarettes contain about 600 ingredients. Many of these ingredients are also in cigars and hookahs. When they burn, they generate more than 7,000 chemicals, most of which are toxic. At least 69 of them are carcinogenic, or known to cause cancer. While not all the effects of smoking are immediate, the complications and damage can last for years. However, quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases.
