Bihar man dies of heatstroke in Delhi, body temperature was at 108°F

A 40-year-old man died of heatstroke in Delhi which is battling an unprecedented heatwave with record-breaking temperatures. He died due to multiple organ failure after his body temperature rose to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, almost 10 degrees above normal. Delhi's primary weather station, Safdarjung observatory, on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, the highest in 79 years, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. It was 46.7 degrees Celsius on June 17, 1945. Other areas of the city also sizzled with maximum temperatures recorded at 49.1 degrees Celsius in Najafgarh, 49 degrees Celsius at Pusa and 48.4 degrees Celsius at Narela.

The victim, who belonged to Bihar's Darbhanga, was admitted to the government-run Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital late on Monday night. He died due to multiple organ failure after his body temperature rose to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, almost 10 degrees above normal.

"The patient's kidneys and liver had failed due to excessively high body temperature, following which he died during treatment," Dr Rajesh Shukla of RML Hospital said while speaking to the media.

"... Death occurred due to the heat, although the hospital made every effort to provide proper treatment," Dr Shukla said.

Delhi has been reeling under heat wave conditions for the past few days, with at least three weather stations in the city -- Mungeshpur, Narela and Najafgarh -- recording nearly 50 degrees Celsius.

Delhi's primary weather station, Safdarjung observatory, on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, the highest in 79 years, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. It was 46.7 degrees Celsius on June 17, 1945.

Other areas of the city also sizzled with maximum temperatures recorded at 49.1 degrees Celsius in Najafgarh, 49 degrees Celsius at Pusa and 48.4 degrees Celsius at Narela.

The temperatures soared in the national capital as hot winds blew into the city from Rajasthan, the IMD officials said.
