Bhopal: A 13-year-old girl from Ashok Nagar has got a new lease of life after a successful emergency surgery for a malignant brain tumour at AIIMS-Bhopal .“The patient became conscious the very next day and is doing well in the postoperative period. Such cases are handled only in specialized centres. Only a few cases of primary malignant round cell tumour of calvarium have been reported till date in the world,” said AIIMS Bhopal director Dr Ajai Singh.This complex case highlights the importance of specialised care in treating rare and aggressive medical conditions. The collaborative efforts of the neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and anesthesia teams were pivotal , he added.The tumour in patient, which had grown to the size of a football and was protruding from her skull, was removed by a team of neurosurgeons and other specialists at AIIMS Bhopal.The patient had previously undergone surgery for a smaller tumour in the same area a few months back, which was identified as a malignant round cell tumour. Despite the initial treatment, the tumour rapidly grew to a massive size. Upon arrival at the hospital, an MRI revealed that the tumour had eroded through the skull.AIIMS Bhopal expert’s Dr Amit Agrawal, Dr Adesh Shrivastava, Dr Sumit Raj and Dr Pradeep Chouksey, decided to perform an emergency surgery. The surgery, which lasted around 8 hours, was led by Dr Sumit Raj with assistance from Dr Jitendra and Dr Abhishek.
