ChatGPT 4o teaches maths to Salman Khan’s son, shows tutor jobs are now at risk

Salman Khan, the renowned founder of Khan Academy, recently explored the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence in education alongside his son, Imran Khan. In a session facilitated by OpenAI, they engaged with ChatGPT 4o to test its tutoring prowess in mathematics. During the session, Salman Khan explicitly requested that ChatGPT 4o tutor his son in solving a math problem without merely providing the solution. What's exciting about ChatGPT 4o is its expansion beyond text-based interactions. OpenAI plans to offer ChatGPT 4o for free, with both free and paid users having access, albeit with gradual rollout.

The video was shared by Khan on X.

During the session, Salman Khan explicitly requested that ChatGPT 4o tutor his son in solving a math problem without merely providing the solution. Instead, the AI was tasked with guiding Imran through the problem-solving process, emphasising comprehension over rote learning.

ChatGPT 4o adeptly engaged Imran in a dialogue, asking questions and nudging him towards the correct path without outright providing answers. The conversation revolved around identifying sides of a triangle relative to an angle, understanding trigonometric concepts, and applying them to find a solution. Imran, under the AI's guidance, successfully grasped the concepts and solved the problem with minimal intervention.

This demonstration not only showcased the potential of AI in personalised tutoring but also raised questions about the future of traditional teaching roles. ChatGPT 4o’s ability to effectively teach complex mathematical concepts indicates a shift in the dynamics of education, where AI-powered platforms could increasingly replace human tutors.

While traditional teaching methods have long been integral to education, advancements in AI now offer scalable, personalised, and cost-effective alternatives.

OpenAI made some big reveals at its Spring Update event, led by Sam Altman. Amongst the announcements was the introduction of ChatGPT 4o, the latest AI model in the GPT-4 series. Unlike rumours of GPT-5, Altman clarified that GPT-4o would be the focus, promising improvements in speed, cost-efficiency, and a higher rate limit compared to its predecessors.

What's exciting about ChatGPT 4o is its expansion beyond text-based interactions. It now incorporates voice and vision capabilities, allowing users to interact through speech and visual data interpretation. This move aims to make the AI experience more human-like.

OpenAI plans to offer ChatGPT 4o for free, with both free and paid users having access, albeit with gradual rollout. Paid users may enjoy early access and higher messaging limits, potentially up to five times more than non-paying users. However, OpenAI hasn't confirmed these details yet.

Overall, ChatGPT 4o's introduction marks a significant step in AI advancement, promising enhanced interaction and utility across various applications.
