Nagpur: Residents of Sadiqabad Colony in Mankapur are peeved by NMC solid waste management department’s move to place a waste bin on an open plot near Passport Seva Kendra, Mankapur. The bin is attracting heaps of garbage from all neighbouring vegetable markets, as well as mutton and chicken shops in the locality.Residents claimed several chikungunya case have been reported in the area because of rampant dumping of filth and waste, causing not just foul stench and unhygienic conditions but also mosquito breeding in discarded items.Deputy municipal commissioner Gajendra Mahalle didn’t respond to TOI calls.“The open land adjacent to Passport Seva Kendra is being used as a waste collection point. People keep throwing household and hotel waste, food, and various contaminated items here. Flies and animals keep hovering over this garbage. The foul stench is unbearable for passers-by and local residents,” said Dr MA Rasheed, media secretary, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Nagpur.Rasheed appealed to the administration to take control of the area and create a parking space here. “This would ease parking problems for people coming to the passport office too,” he said.Farrukh Hasan, a resident of Sadiqabad, said despite assurances by NMC on June 26, no action has been taken. “A huge pile of garbage is being dumped in the open area and as the monsoon season has started chikungunya and dengue cases are on the rise. Will the NMC take appropriate measure to stop this garbage dumping before it is too late?” he said.Mohammed Fazlul Rahman, secretary, Association of Apartment Owners of Sadiqabad Condominium, said huge quantity of garbage is thrown by vendors of weekly bazaar of Anant Nagar, and by biryani outlets in Jafar Nagar. “Residents are living in fear of getting infected by chikungunya,” he said.Rahman has been lodging complaints with the department for the last one year. He has lodged more than 100 complaints, he said.Dr Mohammad Faisal, head and professor of orthopaedics department, IGGMCH, said the outbreak of chikungunya cases started from Friends Colony, and fresh cases are being reported from Mankapur, close to the Passport Seva Kendra.“After recovery from viral infection, patients are coming to us for further management as swelling in joints stay for a long time. I have been following these cases since March-April. Initially patients came in from Katol Road, but now the hotspot has shifted to Mankapur,” he said.
