Cole Palmer starts again but England lose friendly to Iceland, 1-0

This game of course mattered a whole lot less, but it’s still not an ideal send-off. Cole Palmer got another start and set up what should’ve been the equalizer, but Harry Kane managed to miss the absolute sitter. Palmer played 77 minutes; Conor Gallagher was an unused substitute. Neither player got on the scoresheet, nor did Nicolas Jackson, who featured in Senegal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo in a World Cup qualifying match. Jackson did miss a great chance, which makes him just like Harry Kane.

England’s second and final preparatory friendly ahead of the 2024 European Championships in Germany produced a distinctly underwhelming result, with Iceland winning 1-0 at Wembley last night, echoing their win over the Three Lions back at Euro 2016. This game of course mattered a whole lot less, but it’s still not an ideal send-off.

Gareth Southgate fielded a strong lineup with a bit of rotation from the last match, but they drew a blank against a distinctly unimpressive Iceland outfit, while giving up a rather soft goal at the other end. Cole Palmer got another start and set up what should’ve been the equalizer, but Harry Kane managed to miss the absolute sitter. Palmer also saw an effort blocked by a defender after intercepting a clearance at the edge of the box, and let an ever better chance go begging in the second half when he opted to try to take the ball around the goalkeeper instead of just taking a shot when put clean through in the box. Not quite cold enough this time!

But hey, it’s just a friendly, right?

Palmer played 77 minutes; Conor Gallagher was an unused substitute.

Elsewhere, Mykhailo Mudryk played about 20 minutes for Ukraine in their 3-1 defeat against Poland while Armando Broja played the first half in Albania’s 3-1 win over Azerbaijan. Neither player got on the scoresheet, nor did Nicolas Jackson, who featured in Senegal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo in a World Cup qualifying match. Jackson did miss a great chance, which makes him just like Harry Kane.
