The extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet on Saturday to discuss the Lok Sabha results and the future course of action.

The meeting will be chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and will begin at 11 a.m. at the Congress headquarters on Saturday.

The party has put up its best performance in the past one decade, winning 99 of the 328 seats it contested as part of the INDIA bloc. In 2019, its tally was 52, which was not enough to win the official position of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha.

With the LoP’s office assured, a section of the party wants former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to assume that position. The issue could be raised in the meeting of the CWC — the highest decision-making body of the party.

There may also be a discussion on which of the two seats Mr. Gandhi should retain for political reasons. He had won from two constituencies, Wayanad in Kerala and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Top Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, besides other leaders would participate in the deliberations.

The party is also hosting a dinner for all its newly elected MPs on Saturday evening.
