Congress working panel dissolved, Adhir Ranjan denies leaving chief's post: Sources

The West Bengal Congress has dissolved its state working committee, including the post of state president held by former Baharampur MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, in a meeting on Friday, sources said.

The meeting, led by Ghulam Ahmed Mir, the state in-charge of Congress, passed two major resolutions -- one on the organisational changes in the state and another one urging Rahul Gandhi to take up the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

According to sources, at the meeting, a resolution was passed where the Bengal Pradesh Congress dissolved their working committee, including the post of state president held by Adhir Ranjan Choudhury.

The resolution was sent to Congress headquarters and their national president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi to decide and appoint or reappoint the committee, including the president's post, as they see fit, sources added.

Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, who presided over the press conference after the meeting, stated that they had passed a resolution allowing the national Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the high command to change or reshuffle the Pradesh Congress working committee at their discretion.

When questioned if he had resigned from the post of state president, Adhir said, “I am interim state president. The day Kharge took charge as All India president, all state presidents' tenures became interim as per party rules."

Notably, the Congress could win only one seat in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The party also passed a second resolution asking Rahul Gandhi to become the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. The resolution has been sent to the national president of the party and Rahul Gandhi.

The newly elected MP Isha Khan Chowdhury, former Baharampur MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, Pradeep Bhattacharjee, and observer BP Singh also took part in the meeting.
