New Delhi: Ultra-processed foods tend to taste good and are mostly not that expensive. There have been long discussions over the negative impact of ultra-processed foods on our health. This is mostly because it contains less dietary fibre and excess sugar.

A new study that has been spanning almost two decades now has found that a diet of ultra-processed foods could certainly raise the risk of dying from chronic respiratory diseases.

According to a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition, diets that are not nutritionally rich cause inflammation in the body, and worsen lung conditions. This mainly happens because of the poor sources of essential nutrients like antioxidants.

Ultra-processed foods increase the risk of COPD deaths

The research highlighted that a diet having over 40 per cent ultra-processed foods had a 26 per cent higher risk of death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a lung disorder that blocks the airflow leading to difficulty in breathing. Moreover, the researchers also found that these diets increased the overall risk of dying from chronic respiratory diseases like lung cancer, chronic bronchitis emphysema, and asthma by 10 per cent.

For the study, the researchers collected data from over 96,000 people in the US from 1999-2018. Examples of ultra-processed foods

The researchers listed examples of ultra-processed foods which include, chips, chocolate, lollies, biscuits, processed meat, fried chicken, soft drinks, and ice cream. According to one of the researchers and the lead author Tefera Mekonnen, a PhD candidate at The University of Adelaide, Australia, these foods mentioned above are full of preservatives and additives that enter into our bloodstream and may contribute to stress and chronic inflammation leading to respiratory conditions.
