The prevalence of myopia among Indian children has escalated markedly over the years, particularly in urban areas. From 4.44 percent in 1999, it surged to 21.15 percent in 2019, with projections indicating further increases to 31.89 percent by 2030. This rise, attributed to a generational effect, is anticipated to elevate myopia prevalence across all age groups by 10.53 percent from 2020 to 2050. These statistics underscore the importance for immediate intervention and lifestyle adjustments to mitigate this concerning trend. Urgent proactive measures are crucial to address the growing myopia epidemic among Indian children.

Myopia, commonly known as near-sightedness, is a refractive error that causes distant objects to appear blurry while close objects remain clear. Myopia is becoming increasingly prevalent among children due to several factors, says Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, director Dr Basu Eye hospital. According to him, some of the factors include smartphone and computer usage. Studies indicate that the use of electronic devices by myopic children is associated with increased exposure to blue light, contributing to eye strain and macular degeneration. The issue is further exacerbated by a decrease in outdoor activities and pollutants in the environment.

Ayurvedic solutions for myopia

Ayurveda offers holistic solutions for various health conditions, including myopia and other eye disorders. Using natural remedies and therapies, Ayurvedic treatments aim to restore balance to the body's doshas, nourish the eyes, and improve overall eye health. Some ayurvedic interventions for myopia include:

Tarpana therapy: Tarpana, an Ayurvedic eye care therapy, involves gently nourishing the eyes with medicated ghee or oil. This therapy helps lubricate the eyes, improve vision, and alleviate dryness and irritation. It is particularly beneficial during the summer when the eyes are more susceptible to dryness and heat-related discomfort.

Panchakarma therapy: This detoxifying treatment removes toxins from the body, including the eyes, promoting clarity of vision.

Netra basti: Warm medicated oil is pooled around the eyes, bathing them to nourish tissues and improve vision.

Trataka: A yogic practice focusing on a candle flame to enhance concentration and eye focusing ability.

Triphala and amla consumption: It's a traditional Ayurvedic formula consisting of three fruits – amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki, is renowned for its eye-strengthening properties, says Basu. Consuming triphala powder and Amla naturally can help improve vision and prevent eye-related disorders. Opt for dried amla fruits instead of candied ones to maximise their therapeutic benefits. Triphala supports overall eye health and may help alleviate symptoms of myopia.

Other ways:

Include eye-healthy nutrients in your diet: Leafy greens, carrots, vitamins C-rich fruits, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids should be included in your diet, says Basu. These nutrients support optimal eye health and may aid in preventing myopia progression.

Stay hydrated: Water and nourishing liquids should be consumed frequently to prevent dryness in the eyes, which can exacerbate myopia symptoms.

Minimising processed foods: Reduce the consumption of processed and refined foods, which lack essential nutrients and may contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress, adversely affecting eye health.

Moderating sugar intake: Limit the intake of refined sugars and sugary beverages, as excessive sugar consumption has been linked to inflammation and may exacerbate myopia symptoms.

Balanced meals: Include a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet to enhance eye health.
