Deadline to apply for Team India head coach ends as top foreign names stay away

It has been reported that no notable foreign name applied for the post of Indian men’s cricket team head coach role as the deadline came to an end on Monday. BCC is in no hurry to appoint a coach right away and the announcement can come as late as August. “The deadline is fine, but the BCCI brass wouldn’t mind taking some more time before reaching a decision. Right now, the team will be busy with World T20 for the better part of the month of June. After that seniors will be rested from tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe where any of the NCA-based senior coaches can accompany the team.

The application process for the post of Indian men’s cricket team head coach came to an end on Monday and while it will take some time before we get any clarity on who could be Rahul Dravid’s replacement after the T20 World Cup 2024, it has been reported that no notable foreign name has applied for the job.

The revelation was made by news agency PTI on Monday in a report which stated that big overseas names staying away from applying for the post of Indian men’s cricket team chief coach could be because of BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s statement where he said that the board is looking to hire a coach who has in-depth knowledge of Indian domestic cricket.

“It is understood that no notable foreign name has applied for the post, especially after BCCI secretary Jay Shah made it clear that the Board is looking at someone who has risen through the ranks and knows the domestic structure,” PTI stated in its report.

Former legendary cricketers like Ricky Pointing, Justin Langer, Andy Flower and Michael Hussey have already said that they will not be applying for the job as they are happy with franchise cricket assignments.

The report also added two important things: 1) VVS Laxman was BCCI’s primary target but the former batter is not interested as he doesn’t want to get into a role that will require him to be with the team for 10 months in a year.

So what’s the hurry,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders team mentor Gautam Gambhir is reportedly now the favourite for the job but has maintained a silence on the matter. The BCCI has also not said anything. KKR recently won the IPL 2024 by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 final.
