Pune: From 44 in May to 157 in June and 216 till July 12, dengue cases have recorded a sharp jump in the city, taking the cumulative count to 718 since Jan this year, including 703 suspected cases.Dr Kalpana Baliwant, acting chief medical officer, said, “As per guidelines, suspected cases are those that have been NS1 Positive in private labs and not confirmed by NIV or BJ Medical College by checking IgG and IgM antibodies. But irrespective of where a person has been tested, we treat each positive case as a dengue case and take insect control measures in the vicinity.”NS1 is a test that detects the presence of a dengue virus protein in the blood. IgG and IgM are antibody tests that help determine if the infection is recent or past, and typically used for confirmation.Dr Piyush Chaudhari, infectious diseases specialist at Jehangir Hospital, said, “We are seeing more complicated dengue cases this year. Some patients appear to have contracted dengue for the second time in their lives. This could indicate that a different strain of the virus is in circulation compared to the previous years.”The dengue virus has four distinct serotypes - DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. When a person is infected by one serotype, s/he develops long-lasting immunity to that particular strain but remains susceptible to the other three serotypes.Dr Urvi Shukla, chief intensivist at the Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre, told TOI, “We are seeing several cases of dengue encephalitis, which is a severe complication where the dengue virus causes inflammation in the brain. People are presenting with severe and sudden drops in platelet counts, as low as 7,000 to 8,000 platelets.”Various factors could be contributing to this, including irregular rainfall, which creates more breeding grounds for mosquitoes that spread the infection, she said. — Neha Madaan
