Pune: Five confirmed dengue cases have been reported in the Pimpri Chinchwad civic limits within a week, posing a challenge to civic officials to arrest the spread of mosquito-borne diseases .The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) officials said three confirmed cases of dengue were reported in the last week of June in the twin cities. Two more cases were reported on Tuesday.As many as 10 dengue cases have been reported in the Pune civic limits so far.Last year, a total of 250 confirmed dengue cases were reported in the PCMC civic limits. There was one casualty.Of the five dengue-infected patients in the Pimpri Chinchwad limits this year, three are men and two are women. “Four of these patients have been discharged from hospital. The other patient is being treated in a private hospital. He is also stable,” a PCMC official said.Medical officer Laxman Gophane of the PCMC’s health department said, “Early testing prevents health complications because of diseases like dengue. Hence, we appeal to people to immediately report to hospitals in case of symptoms like fever or rashes on the skin.”Besides the five confirmed dengue cases, a total of 10 confirmed cases of malaria have been reported in the PCMC limits till June. PCMC officials have started taking preventive measures to arrest the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. The civic staffers surveyed over 1.38 lakh establishments, including residential structures, construction sites and scrap and puncture shops, in June this year. The survey teams identified over 2,000 mosquito breeding spots in these places.“The survey is still being carried out by our staffers to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne disease. We appeal to citizens to cooperate with the survey teams. We have served notices on 964 errant establishments, while a fine of Rs2.19 lakh has been collected till June this year,” an official from the health department of PCMC said.PCMC has also started the process of recruiting 56 “breeding checkers”. They will carry out surveys to identify the mosquito breeding spots across the civic limits to prevent diseases like dengue and chikungunya. “There is a vacancy for 56 people in eight municipal hospitals for the post of ‘breeding checkers’. They will be recruited for a period of two months,” said another PCMC official.(With inputs bySteffy Thevar)
