Mumbai: A group of civil society activists met state chief electoral officer S Chockalingam Saturday, raising “serious concerns” over the manner in which the ongoing Lok Sabha elections are being conducted. This initiative was part of a larger civil society campaign held nationwide May 11, demanding that the EC ‘Grow A Spine or Resign’.The seven representatives who met the CEO were women’s rights activists Sujata Gothoskar and Sandhya Gokhale, writer Rajni Bakshi, peace activist Tushar Gandhi, social activist Guddi SL, journalist Geeta Seshu and general secretary, PUCL Maharashtra , Lara Jesani. They presented a petition to “hold the EC accountable for its inaction against violations of the Model Code of Conduct and laws”. The letter questioned the “delay in releasing voter turnout data in numbers, discrepancies in 2019 voter data, failure to combat hate speech during elections, failure to take action against surrogate ads, failure to stop campaign violations, the need to take equal and impartial action against violating political parties, and the withdrawal and threats to candidates, which are going unchecked.”Chockalingam said he would forward the petition to the ECI and address issues concerning Maharashtra which fell under his jurisdiction. The citizens expressed concern about the “prevalent hate speech in Maharashtra, which is continuing during the election campaign” and requested preventive action during the following week ahead of the May 20 poll, especially by “star campaigners”.Chockalingam reportedly assured action, and urged citizens to use the cVIGIL app and National Grievance Service Portal to report such instances. The team also complained that citizens were being harassed by the authorities under the pretext of having violated the code of conduct.A national campaign on May 11 involved a letter signed by 222 people — lawyers, activists, filmmakers, academics and concerned citizens.
