Is the juice beneficial?

Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai shared the benefits of the ingredients. “It is believed that beetroot is jam-packed with iron, required for producing red blood cells and preventing anemia,” said Dr Agarwal. “Also, pineapple is known to help in iron absorption because of its high vitamin C content, and improving overall immunity,” said Dr Agarwal.

So, is it a foolproof remedy for low iron levels in the body?

The blend provides a good amount of dietary iron, primarily from beetroot, and maximises its absorption thanks to the high vitamin C content from both pineapple and lemon juice, said Abhilasha V, chief clinical nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bengaluru, HRBR Layout, adding the vitamin C from pineapple and lemon significantly enhance the absorption of non-heme iron from beetroot. “Bromelain in pineapple and citric acid in lemon aid digestion, ensuring that the nutrients are efficiently absorbed,” said Abhilasha.

However, one has to be cautious while opting for this beetroot-pineapple-lemon juice as it may work for one individual but not give successful results in others, said Dr Agarwal.

“Though this juice may help feel energised and get rid of fatigue, it cannot be considered a potent remedy for managing iron deficiency. Don’t try anything promoted on social media. Be careful when it comes to the symptoms of iron deficiency such as weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness, fast heartbeat, paleness, shortness of breath, and cold hands and feet,” said Dr Agarwal.

Agreeing, Abhilasha shared that it’s important to note that while this juice can support iron levels, it should not replace medical treatments or supplements prescribed by healthcare professionals.

Seek timely intervention to overcome iron deficiency and prevent further complications such as anaemia, weakness, headaches, restless legs syndrome, pregnancy complications, heart and lung problems, and tiredness.

“It is better to consult a doctor who will advise you on iron supplements and follow the dosage as directed. Try to eat iron-rich foods such as leafy greens such as spinach, eggs, pumpkin seeds, and beans. Choose vitamin C-rich foods like broccoli, red and green bell peppers, cauliflower, tomatoes, strawberries, pineapples, and melons,” said Dr Agarwal.
