New Delhi: During times when we hardly get to eat anything healthy and fresh, many are trying to lose weight and follow a special diet for their well-being. The diets that are becoming famous on social media are mostly influenced by Bollywood celebrities. In a recent interview with a popular lifestyle portal, actor Vidya Balan shared about her commitment to health and wellness. In the interview, she shared insights about her diet plan which is predominantly home-cooked, gluten-free and follows a unique diet called the ‘No Raw Diet’. But what is this trendy diet all about and is it healthy?

Dr K. Somnath Gupta, Consultant Physician & Diabetology, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad shared with News9, “A no-raw diet involves consuming only foods that have been cooked or processed in some manner, eliminating raw foods from the diet. This includes raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and any other foods typically consumed without cooking. Cooking can destroy heat-sensitive vitamins such as vitamin C and some B vitamins Raw foods contain natural enzymes that aid in digestion, which are often destroyed during cooking.”

“While cooked foods still contain fibre, the texture and effectiveness of fibre from raw foods in promoting bowel movements may be reduced. Fermented raw foods like sauerkraut and kimchi provide beneficial probiotics, supporting gut health, which are typically lost during cooking,” added Dr Gupta.

Many raw foods are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, which can be diminished through cooking processes.

Cooked foods are often more calorie-dense, potentially leading to higher caloric intake and weight gain if not monitored.

What happens to your body when you completely avoid a raw diet?

According to Dr Gupta, “Raw foods, being high in water and fibre, can help with satiety and weight management. Cooking kills harmful bacteria and parasites, reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses. Some nutrients, like lycopene in tomatoes, become more bioavailable after cooking. Including both raw and cooked foods ensures a balance of nutrients and health benefits. Some nutrients are better absorbed from cooked foods, while others are best from raw foods. Individuals with certain digestive issues may benefit from avoiding raw. People with weakened immune systems might need to avoid raw foods due to higher risks of infection.”
