Bengaluru: Residents of Royal Lakefront Residency , a BDA-approved residential layout formed in 2003-04, have declared a boycott of the upcoming elections owing to the severe water crisis in the area. The residents claimed that "borewells in the area have gone dry and they have no water supply at all."

In their letter addressed to the Chief electoral officer, the residents said, "We, the residents of RLF Residency layouts (Phase I and I) have decided to boycott the ensuing Parliamentary election, scheduled to take place on Apr 2024 and also subsequent elections in future in case our above grievance has not been met, We seek your action in the matter and come to our rescue."

Highlighting their woes, the residents claimed that they have been trying to get a BWSSB water connection for the last 20 years.

"We are helplessly obliged to depend on unreliable private water tankers paying very heavy charges as the borewells have dried up, everywhere," the letter read.

Bengaluru is currently facing an unprecedented heatwave coupled with a severe water crisis. Weather experts have identified three primary factors contributing to Bengaluru's unusually warm summer: El Niño, anticyclone patterns, and a ridgeline passing through specific latitudes. While some attribute the situation to the urban heat-island effect, A Prasad from the IMD Bengaluru highlights El Niño as the primary culprit.

El Niño, a climatic phenomenon causing the warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, is particularly strong this year. Coupled with global warming, this has led to consistently rising temperatures annually. Consequently, residents may perceive the weather as hotter than usual.

The city's water crisis is exacerbating living conditions amidst rising temperatures this summer. Providing some relief, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts partly cloudy skies over Bengaluru from April 10-13, with the possibility of rain or thunderstorms in the subsequent two days.
