Glenn Maxwell has made unwanted cricket history and Cameron Green has been dumped from his side in a day of brutal drama for the Aussies in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Royal Challengers Bengaluru allrounder Maxwell was dismissed for a record-equalling duck and Green was not even picked to play against his former side as RCB suffered a humbling seven-wicket defeat against the Mumbai Indians.

Green was bought by the Mumbai Indians in 2022 for a then record $A3.15 million before moving to RCB, but the allrounder has struggled with bat and ball this season. Those struggles saw the 24-year-old dropped for the contest against his former team and the news was just as bad for his Aussie teammate, Maxwell.

The veteran Aussie white-ball star has been considered almost undroppable after a history of match-winning knocks in the competition over the years. But Maxwell could be the next Aussie on the chopping block after his wretched start to this season continued with a 17th IPL duck that sees him equal the record held by Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma.

Maxwell was pushed down the order to bat at No.5 but was given out plumb lbw and didn't even bother reviewing after trying to hit across the line of across the line of a wrong 'un from as Shreyas Gopal. “The nightmare season for Maxwell continues, he’s walking,” one commentator said as the out-of-sorts Aussie trudged back to the pavilion.

Glenn Maxwell's horror run in the IPL continues

Maxwell has now scored just 32 runs in his six innings for RCB this season, following scores of 0, 3, 28, 0, 1 and 0. And his day didn't get any better in the field, with the 35-year-old dropping a crucial catch and getting belted for 17 runs off one of his one and only over.

RCB, also lost superstar Virat Kohli for just three at the top of the order but were still able to fashion a competitive total of 8-196, thanks largely to skipper Faf du Plessis's 61, a 26-ball half-century from Rajat Patidar and a dazzling 23-ball unbeaten 53 from veteran keeper Dinesh Karthik.

Ishan Kishan stars as Mumbai chase down target easily

The total would have been even more if not for Mumbai quick Jasprit Bumrah, who stood tall with a five-wicket haul and conceded just 21 runs off his four overs. Mumbai made the chase look easy though after captain Ishan Kishan led the way with a blistering 69 off 34 balls. He and Sharma (38) put on a century opening stand to lay the platform for the home side in Wankhede.

Maxwell couldn't muster a hint of spin in his one expensive over of bowling, with Ishan smacking the Aussie for a six and two boundaries before being hooked. To compound Maxwell's miserable day, he put down a tough catch at point to remove the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav, before going off the ground to receive treatment after hurting his hand.

Suryakumar (52) went on to make a swashbuckling 17-ball half-century to power Mumbai home to a commanding victory with 29 balls to spare. Big-hitting Aussie Tim David wasn't even needed for the Indians after taking two catches for the home side earlier in the match. The win means Mumbai sit seventh on the table, with the ninth-placed RCB only above bottom side Delhi after their first six games and the Capitals having played one match less.
