The West Coast of India, including Mumbai, is bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. This comes after the region has already experienced moderate to heavy rain since last week.
The upcoming downpour will be due the combination of factors. Such as an active offshore trough stretches from South Gujarat to the Kerala coast, which has been channelling moisture and causing widespread showers. Southern districts of Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, coastal Karnataka, and Kerala have all seen moderate to heavy rainfall over the past two days.
The situation is expected to intensify over the next 2-3 days, with particularly heavy rain forecast for Goa and the Maharashtra coast. Mumbai itself is likely to be hit hard, with the skymet predicting heavy to very heavy rain between July 15th and 17th.
Beyond the offshore trough, another weather system is adding to the potential for heavy rain. A cyclonic circulation has formed over the east-central Arabian Sea, near coastal Maharashtra. Additionally, a low-pressure area is developing over the West Central Bay of Bengal. These systems, combined with a trough extending between them, will create favourable conditions for significant rainfall across Maharashtra, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Marathwada.
The heaviest rainfall is expected over Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Goa, and parts of coastal Karnataka, where rainfall amounts could reach three digits (in millimeters). Heavy rain is also forecast for Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur districts in Maharashtra.
The weather pattern is expected to shift by July 16th and 17th, with the heaviest rainfall concentrating over North Konkan, Goa, and parts of South Gujarat.
Given the intensity of the predicted rainfall, there is a significant risk of flooding in South Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa. Authorities are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage and ensure public safety. Residents in these areas are urged to stay informed about weather updates and follow any advisories issued by local authorities.
