Doctors say unsafe sex with multiple partners is the most common cause of the infection.
(Representational Image/Express Archives)Improved testing has led to the detection of over 6,000 cases of syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease primarily linked to unsafe sex, according to data from the Mumbai AIDS Control Society (MDACS) between 2018-19 and 2022-23.
“Syphilis testing has expanded significantly in recent years, covering HIV-infected individuals, high-risk groups, pregnant women, prison inmates and other suspected individuals.
By broadening our testing scope, we have identified more infected individuals.
The good news is that this disease can be completely cured, and testing and treatment are provided free of charge in BMC and government hospitals,” said Dr Vijay Karanjkar, Additional Project Director, MDACS.
