Sunburn is a common skin condition that occurs when the skin is exposed to excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. This overexposure causes the skin to become red, inflamed, and often painful, leading to discomfort that can last for several days. Symptoms of sunburn can range from mild redness and tenderness to severe blistering and peeling. In addition to the immediate discomfort, repeated sunburns can contribute to long-term skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. Despite these risks, sunburn is preventable with proper precautions, such as using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours.

Here are eight effective ways to treat sunburn using household items

Cool water: A straightforward remedy for sunburn is to cool the affected area. Sunburned skin is inflamed, and cool water can help reduce this inflammation. Whether you’re near natural bodies of water like oceans or lakes, or at home with a cool bath, it can prevent the sunburn from worsening, says Ishika Kumar, Noida- based dermatologist and founder of Skin Revive. Avoid chlorinated pools as they can irritate the skin further. Never apply ice directly on the skin as it can cause more harm.

Baking soda and oatmeal: Adding a few tablespoons of baking soda or a cup of oats to a cool bath can provide relief. Baking soda helps minimise sun damage, while oatmeal soothes irritation and retains skin moisture, says Kumar. Soak in the bath for 15-20 minutes, and then gently pat the skin dry with a towel.

Aloe vera gel: Aloe vera is well-known for its soothing properties. The gel from an aloe vera plant can provide immediate relief from the sting of sunburn. If you don’t have an aloe vera plant, opt for 100 percent aloe vera gel available at most drugstores, says Kumar. Avoid aloe-based lotions that might contain ingredients irritating to sunburned skin.

Chamomile tea: It is recognised for its calming effects, can also soothe sunburned skin. Brew the tea, let it cool, and then soak a washcloth in it to apply to the sunburned areas. Be cautious if you are allergic to pollen, as this remedy might trigger an allergic reaction.

Vinegar: The use of vinegar for sunburn relief is debated. Some people suggest adding two cups of vinegar to a cool bath to alleviate the sting, while others warn that its acidity could worsen irritation. Test vinegar on a small area first if you haven’t used it for sunburn before.

Wear loose clothing: Wearing loose, natural fibre clothing such as cotton or bamboo allows your skin to breathe and heal, says Kumar. Tight clothing can aggravate the skin further, whereas loose fabrics help reduce discomfort and promote healing.

Hydration: Sunburn can lead to dehydration as your body directs fluids to the skin’s surface. Drinking plenty of water is crucial to prevent dehydration and aid in the healing process. Aim for at least eight glasses a day and include water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon and cucumber in your diet.

Moisturiser: Keeping your skin moisturised is essential after treating sunburn. Use a fragrance-free, dye-free moisturiser designed for sensitive skin to avoid further irritation. Regular application can help prevent peeling and keep the skin hydrated.

Additional tips

To manage pain, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can be effective. Always stay in the shade, cover the sunburned areas, and keep hydrated. If you experience severe sunburn, signs of dehydration, or fever, seek medical attention immediately.
