Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder, highly prevalent in the tribal population in India. Doctors have called it an underrated blood disorder that has been impacting Indians for a long time, that aggravates especially during the monsoon or humid weather conditions.

Sickle cell is when the red blood cells of the body become "sickle" in shape making it difficult to bend and flow throughout the body.

As of now, there is no treatment for sickle cell disease. However, doctors prescribe medications and other treatment options, which are lifelong, to manage the symptoms.

People with sickle cell disease have to take special precautionary measures to minimise the risk of complications during the monsoon season.

Dr Seema Bhatwadekar, Haematooncologist, Bhailal Amin General Hospital, Vadodara, shared ways how one can keep several precautions in mind.

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is crucial to prevent dehydration, which can trigger sickle cell crises. Dehydration can cause the sickle-shaped red blood cells to clump together and block blood flow, leading to pain and other complications.

Avoid venturing out: Cold temperatures can cause blood vessels to expand, increasing the likelihood of sickle cell crises. Awareness of weather changes allows individuals to plan activities and avoid sudden exposure to cold or rainy conditions. Keeping track of weather forecasts can help individuals with sickle cell disease plan their day accordingly to minimise exposure to weather conditions that may trigger complications.

Protect Against Infections: Monsoon season can bring an increase in infections. Individuals with sickle cell disease should take extra precautions to avoid infections. They should follow habits like frequent hand washing, avoiding crowded places, and taking vaccinations as recommended by the doctor.

Monitor Symptoms: Early detection of symptoms of a sickle cell crisis allows for prompt medical intervention, which can prevent complications.

Be attentive to any signs of a sickle cell crisis. These signs include pain (especially in the bones, chest, or abdomen), fever, swelling, or unusual fatigue. Regular Medication is a Must: Medications prescribed by healthcare providers help manage sickle cell disease by preventing complications and reducing the frequency of crises.

Avoid Strenuous Activities: Strenuous physical activities can lead to dehydration and increase the risk of sickle cell crises. It's advisable to avoid overexertion, particularly during hot and humid weather. Moderate physical activity that does not lead to excessive fatigue or dehydration is recommended.

Stay Informed: Seek Medical Advice: Each person with sickle cell disease may have unique needs and responses to weather changes. Consulting healthcare providers ensures personalised advice and management of the condition.

Regular check-ups and consultations with healthcare providers are important to address any concerns related to sickle cell disease, especially during periods of humid weather.
