The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a rise in occurrence of heatwave days this summer, with above-average temperatures anticipated across various parts of the country. This intense heat poses challenges not only for humans but also pets. Like us, our furry companions can suffer from discomfort, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses during summer months. Dr Bhoomika R., product executive at Drools, lists some heatwave care practices every pet parent should know.

Summer nutrition: As dogs lack sweat glands, they are prone to overheating, particularly during summer months. This can lead to symptoms such as heavy panting, dehydration, dry and pale gums, and potentially even heatstroke. Wet food containing ingredients like chicken, egg, vegetables, spinach and certain fruits can aid in keeping your dog hydrated and cool. With approximately 80 per cent water content, wet food not only provides essential calories but also ensures proper hydration. Incorporating water-rich foods, such as seedless watermelons and cucumbers, into your dog’s diet can be incredibly beneficial. Additionally, yogurt, buttermilk, and coconut water are excellent additions to your pet’s diet.

Hydration: Dogs’ bodies consist of approximately 60-65 per cent water, underscoring the vital role hydration plays in their overall health. Even a minor 5 per cent loss of water can lead to serious health issues. Water serves as a crucial nutrient, facilitating body metabolism and acting as a key component of blood and body fluids, aiding in nutrient transport and waste excretion. Dehydration poses a significant concern, especially during the warmer temperatures of summer. Providing an ample supply of water can help prevent dehydration and heatstroke. Placing water bowls at various points in the house, adding a few ice cubes to keep water cool, and scheduling walks during the cooler parts of the day are effective ways to keep pets hydrated.

Paw protection: Protecting pets’ paw pads from scorching hot surfaces is essential for their safety and comfort during summer months. Walking them during cooler times, such as early morning or late evening, helps avoid burns and infections, ensuring a pleasant outdoor experience for your furry companions.

Activity: Water play is a popular summer activity for pets. Whether it is enjoying a pool or visiting a dog-friendly beach, many pets love splashing around in the water. Always supervise your pet, as water temperatures can become uncomfortably hot. To prevent skin irritation, ensure you give them a good rinse and dry after swimming. Another way to keep pets engaged is through interactive toys, stimulating their minds and providing physical exercise without overwhelming them.
