‘I am grateful for the opportunity’ — Xavi gives classy response to being axed by Joan Laporta at Barcelona

Today I spoke about it with the staff and the players that I think we can be proud, because it was not an easy situation. We have been men of the club and a good job has been done, although this year the objectives have not been met. I want to finish in the best possible way and enjoy the last game as well. “Yesterday we spoke with the president, he told me his reasons why he believes the coach needs to be changed. I can only accept it, he is the one who makes all the decisions of the club.

The Xavi Hernández Era is officially over at Barcelona as the legendary midfielder was informed by president Joan Laporta on Friday that he will not continue as first team head coach next season after a messy saga that saw Xavi initially announce his intention to leave, then reverse his decision only to be fired less than a month later.

Xavi has decided to stay classy throughout this soap opera, and once again gave a honorable message in his final press conference ahead of Sunday’s La Liga finale against Sevilla, which will be his last game as Barça coach.

Xavi did not fire any shots at Laporta or sporting director Deco and instead spoke of his gratitude for having the chance to coach the club of his life for nearly three years, and he’ll leave with his head held high after giving everything to the cause.

“I’m fine. These have been difficult days, but I have a clear conscience. I am proud and happy. It’s been two and a half years. Today I spoke about it with the staff and the players that I think we can be proud, because it was not an easy situation. We have given everything. We have been men of the club and a good job has been done, although this year the objectives have not been met. The experience has been spectacular. I am grateful to the Club for the opportunity. I want to finish in the best possible way and enjoy the last game as well. Being coach of Barça has been an honor and a pleasure. “Yesterday we spoke with the president, he told me his reasons why he believes the coach needs to be changed. I can only accept it, he is the one who makes all the decisions of the club. I will always be at Barça’s disposal. We shook hands, shared a hug and we wished each other the best. I will be another culé and I wish the best for the president, the sports director and the players.”

As he did throughout his career as a player, Xavi handled complete chaos with class and poise. He has all the right to be furious with the way the club has treated him, but he wants to maintain unity and leaves as a grateful servant who once again gave his all for Barça.

Thank you, Xavi.
