Moscow: Vladimir Putin took oath as the President of Russia for the record fifth term on Tuesday at the St Andrew's Throne Hall. Putin has been in office for nearly a quarter-century and is the longest-serving Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin.

Putin’s new term will continue till 2030, when he will be constitutionally eligible to run again. At the ceremony inside the gilded Grand Kremlin Palace, Putin placed his hand on the Russian Constitution and vowed to defend it as a crowd of hand-picked dignitaries looked on.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin took office as President of Russia, "I swear, when exercising the powers of the President of the Russian Federation, to respect and protect the rights and freedoms of man and citizen, to observe and protect the Constitution of the Russian Federation, to protect the sovereignty and independence, security and integrity of the state, to faithfully serve the people."

71-year-old Putin won 87 per cent of the vote in the March presidential election. Putin succeeded President Boris Yeltsin in the waning hours of 1999. The ceremony comes at a time when Russia has been heavily sanctioned by the West and is turning to other regimes like China, Iran and North Korea for support following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine that has become Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II.
