IMD warns of cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu, issues rainfall alert for 5 states

Isolated very heavy rainfall is predicted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal during May 17th-21st; Kerala, Mahe May 17th-19th; coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema on May 17th, and south interior Karnataka on May 20th & 21st. There's also a possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala on May 20th & 21st.Meanwhile, Kerala continues to experience heavy rainfall, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert in two districts: Malappuram and Wayanad. The IMD's forecast predicts very heavy rainfall in the state between May 18th and 20th due to strong westerly and south westerly winds. The IMD warned that some districts may experience rainfall similar to a red alert, indicating heavy to extremely heavy rain. IMD had earlier forecast that monsoon could reach Kerala coast around end of this month.

The India Meteorological Department IMD ) has reported heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh , Telangana, as well as heavy rainfall in isolated regions of Coastal & South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala . This weather pattern is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over south Tamil Nadu and another over Rayalaseema & adjoining north Tamil Nadu, along with a trough running from south Chhattisgarh to the Comorin area.Over the next 7 days, widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms , lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, south Karnataka, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema may experience isolated to scattered rainfall with similar weather conditions Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal, Kerala-Mahe, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka during May 17th-21st, and Lakshadweep on May 20th & 21st. Orange alerts were issued for Palakkad and Malappuram on May 18th, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki on May 19th, and seven districts on May 20th.An orange alert was issued in seven districts for May 21st as well. The IMD warned that some districts may experience rainfall similar to a red alert, indicating heavy to extremely heavy rain. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected in some places in Kerala till May 20th.According to IMD, southwest monsoon is very likely to advance into South Andaman Sea, some parts of SoutheastBay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around 19th May, 2024. IMD had earlier forecast that monsoon could reach Kerala coast around end of this month.
