Bathinda: The temporarily closing of the provincial nominee programme (PNP) and the Atlantic immigration programme in the retail and services sector under postgraduate work permit ( PGWP ) — citing the burden on the healthcare and housing sectors — has affected a number of international students, including Punjab origin persons in the Prince Edward Island (PEI) province of Canada.Going by it, the Punjab-based students are holding protests and have planned a rally on Monday in province’s capital Charlottetown against changes in provincial immigration policy that is expected to considerably reduce intake of permanent residents.PEI is the smallest province in Canada near Nova Scotia. As a number of students from Punjab living in the province are likely to be affected by the policy changes, Montreal Youth Students Organisation (MYSO), a body consisting of Punjabis, have come to the support of those likely to be affected.“The changes in immigration policy announced in the recent past may leave a number of foreign workers working in the retail and services sector without work as they are unlikely to get their work permit renewed once it expires.Even if they shift to the healthcare, childcare and construction trades now, they may not get any benefit as work permits in these sectors will be extended only to those who have prior experience,” said MYSO representative Manpreet Kaur.As the PGWP of workers in the retail and services sector is unlikely to be extended, they may have no choice but to leave the country which makes us raise voice in their support, Manpreet said. The international students and foreign workers often meet the requirement for workers in the province which helps them get permanent residence (PR) after working and staying in the region for a particular time period but changes in PNP have shocked the foreign workers who were hoping to apply for PR.During the shortage of workforce, the provinces relax the norms and whenever they are filled they start acting strict, which is not justified. The changes shouldn’t be applicable for existing foreign workers working in the retail and services sector, the MYSO has pointed out.
