Bollywood actor Imran Khan, who has been out of the limelight for the past decade, has opened up about the minimalist lifestyle that he adopted after stepping away from showbiz. From leaving his luxurious Pali Hill bungalow to moving into an empty apartment, the actor discussed his journey of separating himself from external trappings. In an interview with Film Companion, Imran said that he moved out of his fancy bungalow in Pali Hill to an apartment in Bandra five years ago, around the time he separated from former wife Avantika Malik.

Imran said, “I started by moving into what was basically an empty space. I started bringing things into the space based on my requirements. I had a television because I like to watch movies, and I had a sofa. And then, bit by bit, I started to bring in things only based on what I actually need.” The actor continued, “I didn’t have any live-in staff; I had a person who came in every alternate day to do the heavy cleaning. But I bought myself one of those Dyson vacuum cleaners, and said, ‘I will clean myself.’ If I have only three plates, one per meal—breakfast, lunch, dinner—there’s only three plates to wash. So how big can the mess get?”

When asked about the rumours that he’d rented Karan Johar’s apartment with girlfriend Lekha Washington, the actor said, “Again, it’s one of those things that I have never fully been able to wrap my head around. The notion of celebrity and fame and the idea that people follow you around literally and report on you and comment on you and all of that. I’ve always found it to be a little odd.” Also read | Imran Khan says failure of Katti Batti made him quit the industry, opens up about how his passion was not driven by money: ‘Life took me in another direction’ Imran said that he and Lekha are negotiating his three-plate policy and figuring out how to settle on a middle-ground. “It’s an ongoing negotiation. It’s like ‘can we get more plates? How many do we really need? I may do with three; can we do with five? Six? Okay, three for you, three for me.’ So that is the ongoing negotiation that we’re figuring out as we move into a new place,” he said.
