In 1 week, Customs officials seize 10 kg gold, arrest 5 passengers at Mumbai airport

Customs officials have seized over 10.90 kg of gold worth Rs 6.84 crore and arrested five Indian air passengers involved in smuggling at the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) airport in various cases last week. The passenger who was travelling from Lucknow, had travelled from Colombo to Kathmandu and crossed via Indo-Nepal land border, and took a flight to Mumbai, Customs sources have said. Customs officials have seized over 10.90 kg of gold worth Rs 6.84 crore and arrested five Indian air passengers involved in smuggling at the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) airport in various cases last week.

According to the officials, intensive vigilance from June 17 to 24, led to the seizure of smuggled gold that was concealed in various forms like gold dust in wax, crude jewellery, gold bars, layers of cloth, cardboard, and in the body of passengers.

Among the arrested, two of them were travelling from Dubai, and the rest from Kuwait, Muscat and Lucknow. The passenger who was travelling from Lucknow, had travelled from Colombo to Kathmandu and crossed via Indo-Nepal land border, and took a flight to Mumbai, Customs sources have said.

The five arrested passengers were found carrying 24 carat gold dust in wax form and in clothes having a total net weight of 5,680 grams concealed in their undergarments, between layers of cloth, under the sole of shoes and in the body, a Customs official said.

Besides, 10 Indians travelling from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Addis Ababa, Singapore, Jakarta and Sharjah were intercepted and found carrying 3,831 grams gold concealed by pasting on the sidewalls of the cardboard box, inside the body and on the body, the customs said.

One of the seized pouches was found lying unclaimed in the washroom near Arrival Immigration Hall and another packet was recovered unclaimed in the Arrival Hall, CSMI Airport, during routine cleaning.

Foreign currency worth Rs 17 lakh across different cases have also been seized.
