Indian farm worker in Italy dies after employer dumps him on roadside with severed arm

An Indian farm labourer, Satnam Singh, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Wednesday (June 19) after being abandoned by the roadside with a severed hand, an injury sustained while working on a farm in Latina, Italy, about 50 km from Rome. Satnam Singh’s arm was reportedly severed during a work accident. The Indian Embassy in Italy confirmed Singh’s death and announced the tragic development on its official social media account, stating, "The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. According to local sources, it was Singh's wife and friends who alerted the police, following which an air ambulance was dispatched to his residence. This event has sparked a conversation about the treatment of undocumented workers and the conditions they endure while working in Italy.

Satnam Singh’s arm was reportedly severed during a work accident. Instead of receiving immediate medical attention, he was dumped near his house. This incident has been condemned by Italy’s Labour Minister Marina Calderone as an "act of barbarity."

The Indian Embassy in Italy confirmed Singh’s death and announced the tragic development on its official social media account, stating, "The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance."

Addressing the Italian parliament, Minister Calderones said, "The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions...has died."

Reports indicate that Satnam, approximately 31 years old, was working without legal papers.

He was injured on Monday (June 17) while cutting hay, accidentally severing his arm in a slicing machine.

According to local sources, it was Singh's wife and friends who alerted the police, following which an air ambulance was dispatched to his residence.

The opposition Democratic Party of Italy also criticised the conditions under which Singh was forced to work.
