Indian man sentenced to life for murdering teen Indian wife in London

A court in the UK has sentenced an Indian national to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to murdering his 19-year-old wife at their home in Croydon, London in October 2023. According to the Metropolitan Police, Sahil Sharma, 24, called the police on October 29, 2023, saying that he had killed his wife, Mehak Sharma, also an Indian national, at their home on Ash Tree Way, Croydon. On February 8 this year, Sahil pleaded guilty to murdering Mehak at the Kingston Crown Court, but he did not provide a reason for the killing. “While I am aware that nothing can bring Mehak Sharma back to them, I hope the sentencing will bring some closure to her loved ones,” she said. Sahil hasn’t just murdered Mehak, I feel he has killed me as well,” read her statement.

A police team was rushed to the home, where officers found Mehak unresponsive.

The police said Mehak had suffered "catastrophic" knife injuries to her neck and was pronounced dead at the scene. A special post-mortem examination conducted on October 31, 2023 found that a stab wound to the neck was the cause of Mehak's death.

On February 8 this year, Sahil pleaded guilty to murdering Mehak at the Kingston Crown Court, but he did not provide a reason for the killing.

During the sentencing on April 26, the court said that he has to serve a minimum of 15 years before he can apply for parole.

“This is a tragic case that has completely devastated a family. In killing his wife, Sharma has robbed her family of a loving daughter for reasons known only to himself,” the PTI news agency quoted Detective Inspector (DI) Laura Semple from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command as saying.

“While I am aware that nothing can bring Mehak Sharma back to them, I hope the sentencing will bring some closure to her loved ones,” she said.

A victim impact statement was read out to the court on April 26 from Mehak’s mother, who said she feels broken after her daughter’s brutal killing.

“The one thing I want more than anything is to have my daughter back but this is impossible. No amount of prayers, money or support will bring her back to me. I am broken. Sahil hasn’t just murdered Mehak, I feel he has killed me as well,” read her statement.
