Inside Kriti Sanon's journey as producer; plans for 'Crew' sequel

What's the story Bollywood sensation Kriti Sanon is on a roll in 2024! Fresh off the success of the comedy heist Crew, Sanon is headlining Netflix's upcoming thriller Do Patti alongside Kajol. This project also marks Sanon's debut as a producer, collaborating with writer Kanika Dhillon. In a recent chat with Variety, Sanon opened up about her foray into production and her exciting plans for the future.

Inspiration

Sanon's journey into film production was inspired by 'Mimi'

Sanon revealed her interest in the filmmaking process was ignited during her work on the surrogacy comedy-drama Mimi (2021). She shared, "I really enjoyed the whole process of how that film was made. And I felt that I want to eventually also get involved in certain films that I feel passionate about, beyond just being an actor, (to) creatively be there in the whole filmmaking process." "I was feeling like it was the right time for me to find something."

Collaboration

'Do Patti': Sanon 'got goosebumps' hearing Dhillon's story

Sanon and Dhillon collaborated on Do Patti, merging their ideas into one cohesive narrative. "When I heard it, I got goosebumps," Sanon said, adding, "It's been more than anything, creatively very satisfying to see how an idea...turns into a story and how that story then finally comes alive." Notably, Dhillon's previous work includes writing for Anurag Kashyap's Manmarziyaan (2018), Vinil Mathew's Netflix original film Haseen Dillruba (2021), and Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki (2023).

Challenge

Meanwhile, Sanon dishes on the challenges of portraying SIFRA

Sanon's first film of 2024 was the sci-fi romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, where she portrayed a robot named SIFRA. She described the challenge of making the character believable, stating, "What was challenging was that there was no reference point to it. We have seen a lot of robot films before, even in India, but they've been very, very robotic. Here, it was almost a humanoid...So, (SIFRA) has to feel that real."

Sharing screen space

Sanon felt 'big high' sharing screen with Tabu, Kareena Kapoor

After tasting success with TBMAUJ, Sanon appeared in Crew. The plot revolves around three flight attendants who resort to gold smuggling to rescue their failing airline. She co-starred with Bollywood heavyweights Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan, an experience she described as a "big high." "Just to be there in the same space as these two powerful women who have been reinventing themselves...even after having done so many films, that was a big high for me," Sanon said.

Future projects

Sequels for 'Bhediya' and 'Crew' are currently being developed

Speaking about Sanon's future ventures, a sequel to her 2022 film Bhediya is underway, alongside one for Crew. Sanon is presently reviewing scripts to determine her next venture. "I'm happy and satisfied, but yet still a little restless to explore how I can push the envelope a little more. I'm not in a hurry to sign something, because I really want to do something only when I love it. So, I am looking for something that challenges me," Sanon expressed.
