JD(U) authorises Nitish Kumar to take a call on leadership, ministries; BJP sends MP to usher him to Parliament

“The meeting decided that Nitish Kumar would choose the leader of the party. Other details will be discussed in the NDA meeting,” JD(U) MP Alok Kumar Suman said. Another JD(U) leader said the meeting authorised Nitish Kumar to make decisions on the ministries that the party would stake claim to. The Janata Dal (United) Parliamentary Board meeting held at Nitish Kumar’s residence on Friday gave the responsibility of choosing the party’s leadership in the Parliament to the Bihar chief minister. Party leaders said details about government formation, including who would get what ministry, would be discussed at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting at the Parliament.

“The meeting decided that Nitish Kumar would choose the leader of the party. A unanimous decision has been taken that JD(U) will wholeheartedly support the NDA. No discussion on ministries took place in the meeting. Other details will be discussed in the NDA meeting,” JD(U) MP Alok Kumar Suman said.

Notably, on Thursday, the JD(U) added a review of the Agnipath defence recruitment scheme to its list of expectations from the new NDA government, apart from four ministerial berths. JD(U) leaders said they would also push for a special financial package from the Centre for Bihar’s development. With 12 MPs, the JD(U) is crucial to government formation at the Centre as the BJP is short of the majority mark by 32 seats. The other partner the BJP needs to accommodate is the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which with 16 seats will also demand its pound of flesh, including special status for Andhra Pradesh.
