Marcus Stoinis played a magnificent inning as Lucknow Super Giants breached the Chepauk fortress to hand CSK second defeat in two games of IPL 2024 . Chasing a target of 211, Stoinis single-handedly won the game for LSG, scoring 124* in 63 balls. This is the highest-ever score in a chase in IPL history, going past Paul Valthaty's 120* for KXIP against CSK in 2011.
CSK were in command for most of the chase but the partnership between Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis turned the game in LSG's favour. The players collaborated after the fall of Devdutt Padikkal at a team score of 88 in 11 overs. They added 70 runs in 33 balls to keep LSG's hopes alive, however, Pooran's ( 34 off 15) wicket was a massive blow. Marcus Stoinis, however, was in a zone of his own and kept tormenting the bowlers. Stoinis helped LSG chase 47 in the last three overs to leave CSK fans in shock.
Meanwhile, LSG captain KL Rahul was elated after the win and his reaction in the dressing room after Stoinis hit the winning boundary is going viral on social media.
Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad blasted a magnificent 108 in 60 balls and clubbed with Shivam Dube's 66 in 27 balls, helped CSK post a daunting total of 210-4. The score looked enough at the halfway mark but Stoinis played one of the greatest innings of IPL 2024 to breach Chepauk fortress. Dew had a major role to play as bowling got extremely tough at the latter end of the second innings.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul called the win special in many ways. Rahul also spoke on the move of sending Stoinis at No. 3 and said he felt LSG needed one power-hitter to maximize the powerplay benefits.
"Very special, especially when it’s a game like that. We were way behind the game when we were batting so it was very special to pull it off. It was a fresh start, both teams started off at 0. Different conditions here. I think they started off really well and put us under pressure. 170-180 would’ve been a great total here but they batted really well. Full credit to Stoinis. It was not just power hitting, it was very clever batting. He picked his bowlers and played very well. (On sending Stoinis at 3) We felt like we needed to be braver and capitalize the powerplay and needed 1 power-hitter in the top-3. I’ve realized that T20 cricket has changed in the past couple of years, 170-180 doesn’t always cut it. You need to go harder in the powerplay and the impact player rule also gives you a bit more depth. (On the change to his own batting) Haven't played much T20 cricket so happy that it’s coming off. There’s no set plan, apart from the openers, everyone else is ready to go out whenever we feel it's right. We’re going to keep it flexible.
